Ministry Annual Report -- 2003
ABWE

Name: David Stone
Field:Coastal Peru

A. Give a one or two sentence summary of your ministry assignment.

Church-planting missionary/pastor at “The Chapel on the Rock”: New Life Baptist Church in La Capilla (Las Viñas); Professor and Academic Dean at the Theological Baptist Seminary in Lima; Coastal Peru Field Treasurer

B. What special blessings/highlights did you experience in ministry during the past year?

In March we experienced the joy of sending out a missionary couple from our church to begin a church-planting ministry in the coastal town of Cartavio, north of Trujillo. We have been grateful for the partnership of a Baptist church in Trujillo that is sharing in the financial support of this couple and overseeing their ministry from a closer perspective geographically. We continue to hear encouraging reports of the good ministry of Jonathan and Wendy Dancourt.

It has also been a joy to witness God´s blessing upon the new work in Manchay under the leadership of Pepe Zapata, one of our deacons. Teams from our church have continually visited this new work and helped in various areas of the ministry. A highlight for our church was on December 14, when we baptized 14 people, 7 of them adults from the Manchay mission work.

In July-August I was privileged to participate, along with some of our church young people, in the Mobile medical clinic. The ABWE team of medical personnel from the USA treated 878 patients, 77 of whom received Christ as Savior.

We were also encouraged by our church’s decision in November to increase their missionary commitment by supporting Beto and Gina Mayta (Spain) and C____ (India).

Two members of our church graduated in December from the Baptist Theological Seminary: Jessica Matute with a 3-yr. Diploma in Biblical Counseling and Omar Alvarado with a Bachelor of Biblical Studies.

C. What difficulties did you encounter in ministry during the past year?

The most difficult adjustment was due to the loss of a key church family. Juan Polo, an officer in the Peruvian Navy, was unexpectedly transferred to the USA at about the same time that our co-workers, Steve and Kelley Frerichs, left for their regular furlough ministry. Although we had planned for the Frerichs’ absence, we had not anticipated having to fill the voids created by the absence of a faithful deacon, choir director and director of music. Both Juan and Milagros were active in teaching and leadership ministries and have been greatly missed. We thank God for the willingness of Carlos Panduro to serve as song leader and to help in the area of music. However, I have had to serve as choir director, although I am not gifted nor trained for that ministry. I also play the keyboard frequently to accompany congregational singing. We continue to ask God to provide qualified personnel to enhance our music ministry, including an accomplished musician to play the keyboard.

D. List up to 5 of your major ministry goals for the past year and rate your progress for each: (A = accomplished, S = some progress, N = no progress, D = dropped) E. Describe activities that contributed to your progress for each item listed in D. If there was no progress or you dropped the goal, list the reasons for that.
1. Commission a missionary couple from our church for an evangelistic and church-
planting ministry. A
1. In March we commissioned Jonathan and Wendy Dancourt as our missionaries who began their church-planting ministry in
Cartavio.
2. Increase our missionary family by supporting a least two new missionaries in addition to the couple sent out by our church. A 2. In November the church voted to support Beto and Gina Mayta (Spain) and C___ (India).
3. Complete all paperwork necessary for legal function as a church and the acquisition of an attractive sign. S 3. Although I am working continually with the church secretary and deacon to accomplish this goal, my frustration continues because of all the red tape involved.
4. Send out at least one team from our church for a hands-on, missionary experience of visiting and helping a missions work. A 4. We have continually sent teams from our church to our mission work in Manchay, where they have been actively involved in the work. We also sent a team of young people to accompany two medical mission clinics and translate for the US medical personnel. They were able to lead many to Christ and even visited our mission work in Cartavio!
5. Develop and teach courses in Greek and Homiletics at the Baptist Theological
Seminary of Lima. S
5. I was able to progress well in the
development of the Introductory to Greek
course, which I taught the first semester. I
completed the translation of A System of
Homiletics, by John Benson, and taught
homiletics both semesters, advancing well
beyond previous years in the area of
expository preaching (both instruction and
practice).
6. Set up and organize a church office for
secretarial work, filing of important
documents and counseling ministries. A
6. The office is well equipped, organized and functioning well. Two days per week we have a secretary working there and have it open for counseling.
7. Long-term: To begin a daughter work of the New Life Baptist Church of Las Viñas,
forming a church-planting team with members of the church. A
7. This has been accomplished in Manchay through the leadership and outreach of Pepe Zapata and family. The first contact was through a mother who received Christ at the New Life Prenatal Center. Seven adults have been baptized in this mission work, and our church members continue to help in the ministry there.

F. List at least 5 major goals for the coming year and 2 long-term goals.

1. Assist the mission work in Manchay in organization, purchase of their own property and constructing a church building.

2. Continue pastoring the New Life Baptist Church of Las Viñas, working with Steve and Kelley Frerichs when they return from furlough to begin a university outreach.

3. Produce quality, attractive literature to introduce people to the ministry of the church. This should include a church tract with a clear presentation of the gospel.

4. Develop a Bible study/training program with the men, who are now meeting at 6 AM each Saturday instead of in the middle of the night on Friday!

5. Implement a fuller schedule for use of the church office so that it is open at least four days per week for secretarial work and counseling ministries.

6. Commission Zarela Funegra, a young lady from our church whom God is leading to a ministry among children with the Bible Club Movement.

7. Serve as rector of the Lima Baptist Theological Seminary during Neil Heim’s furlough.

Long term goals.

1. Guide the New Life Baptist Church of Las Viñas in calling a Peruvian pastor or co-pastor.

2. Complete the construction of the Christian education building of the New Life Baptist Church of Las Viñas.
