South-central Peru was hit by an 8.0 magnitude earthquake on August 15, 2007. You can still help! Peruvian churches from other parts of the country contributed to an immediate, massive response to bring needed food, water, blankets and other relief aid to those directly affected by the earthquake. The urgency of providing basic necessities is passed as most of the affected area returned to semi-normal. Stores and markets gradually reopened and electricity and water were restored in many areas. However, the need to rebuild damaged and collapsed homes and churches remained. Families who lost their homes lived on the street, in crowded conditions with neighbors or relatives, or in temporary shacks. The next stage of relief was building small wooden houses and rebuilding several church buildings and our camp. This need continues even now, toward the end of 2008. Please consider whether God could use your generosity to help build a small house or rebuild a church building. Visit www.ABWE.org to GIVE to this
project. |

REBUILDING HOMES Goal: Show Christ's love and impact the community by
providing
wooden shelters for church families and their neighbors.
Build and install 40 wooden shelters for those Christians who don't have adequate housing. (complete!) Phase 2 - Impact the community: |
Many people are still living in temporary shacks in the street. Many families from churches in Chincha and Ica lost their homes.
|
|||||||||||||||||||||||||
Note: We
originally planned to build modular homes of brick and steel reinforced
concrete. However these cost considerably more than
the wooden houses ($3,500 vs. $625). They also require a complicated
and lengthy process to get the necessary paperwork in order (building
permits,
etc). We have realized that many of the people in greatest need do not
have clear title to their land, further complicating permanent construction.
All things considered we believe we can have the greatest impact by building
wooden houses which in most cases provide living conditions comparable
to what people had before the quake. |

Springs in the Desert CAMP Damage: Most of the perimeter wall was destroyed or damaged. A storm surge immediately after the quake dumped seaweed all over the property and buildings and caused additional damage. Priority need: Approximately 650 linear feet
of the perimeter wall must be replaced in order to maintain security.
The caretaker´s home needs to be partially rebuilt. The kitchen
and other facilities need to be refurnished immediately in order to
house
work teams as well as prepare for the next camp season. Secondary need: Several buildings need to be
repaired. Some small structures need to be rebuilt.
